Brown University in Rhode Island held its commencement ceremony on Sunday and one of the honorary degree recipients was Ben Affleck.
The university announced in April that the Argo director would receive an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree for his contribution to the arts and his philanthropic efforts. It was the first college degree of any kind for the Oscar winner and Massachusetts native, notes The Providence Journal.
While Affleck wasn’t the commencement speaker, he did say a few words. “This is a spectacular honor for me. Not only for the education [notch], but now I surpass Matt Damon,” he joked after the students urged him to speak. Affleck’s mother attended the ceremony, which also saw five other honorary degrees presented.
“You only get to become a doctor once, so I knew he wouldn't turn me down,” Eve Gail Hoffman, who represented the Doctor of Medicine recipients on the stage, said after she got a hug from Affleck. She added that both her degree and the hug from the Hollywood star “combined makes it the best day of my life.”
Over 2,410 degrees were handed out during the ceremony Sunday.
Affleck directed Argo last year, which won the Oscar for Best Picture and took home two other Oscars. Affleck and Matt Damon also shared the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for Good Will Hunting.
