Disney Channel to feature first ever same sex couple on ‘Good Luck Charlie’

With shows such as ABC’s Modern Family or ABC Family’s new show, The Fosters, more and more same sex couples are being featured – and accepted – on TV.

During its final season, TV Guide reports Good Luck Charlie will feature a family with two moms. Producers are currently casting the couple, and production will start next week. Because it is the show’s fourth and final season, the couple will only be featured once.

The episode’s storyline will revolve around the Duncan’s setting up a play date for Charlie and a new friend. When her friend comes over, Amy and Bob learn that Charlie’s friend has two moms. The moms befriend Bob and Amy, as one mom listens to Bob babble on, while the other mom chats with Amy.

Last year, Disney Channel featured a teen with two moms in a social outreach campaign called “Make Your Mark.” Its goal to encourage and inspire kids to make a difference, the 14 year old was an aspiring filmmaker who happened to be raised by a lesbian couple. This received recognition and was considered a big step forward for the network. Now, it seems as though Disney Channel is continuing to take more steps forward.

A Disney Channel spokesperson says, “This particular storyline was developed under the consultancy of child development experts and community advisors. Like all Disney Channel programming, it was developed to be relevant to kids and families around the world and to reflect themes of diversity and inclusiveness."

Way to go Disney!
