It’s been over 24 hours since Tim Cook unleashed news of a brighter tomorrow, and I find myself weary with the wait to install iOS 7 on my iPhone. The minutes crawl by as iOS 6 consumes my phone with its gradient bars and plastic-like design that tints my soul.
Okay, now that I’ve only been mildly dramatic, can we talk about how thrilled I am with iOS 7? Can we talk about how my jaw was dropping during the live coverage of WWDC as new features and designs blessed our tired eyes?
Only an Apple event could make me react with such exhilaration and heart-pounding thrill. And finally, iPhone users are getting everything we have complained about for years. And by iPhone users, I mean me.
Here are a few.
”Bleh, everything is just so ugly and drab.”
Fear those ghastly designs no longer, Starbucks-sipping, journal-sketching citizen. The most shocking thing revealed at WWDC had to be the new iOS design. I mean, come on! Look at all that minimalism! That white space! Those dreamy stock icons!
As someone who dabbles in design, I am impressed and will admit that I will not be able to look away when iOS 7 has graced my phone. I’ve had an iPhone for 5 years with the same design. This is a breath of fresh air. A breath of fresh air that looks extremely similar to Windows 8 and Android design.
”Ugh, why can’t you get the Notification Center on the home screen?”
It’s okay sad, technologically competent user, the Notification Center can be pulled down on the home screen so your lazy fingers doesn’t have to perform extra swipes. You can even view notifications for that day instead of seeing the text messages your grandma sent that you blatantly ignored.
I’ve dreamed about this my whole iPhone-living life, especially as my friend, who is a heavy Android user, can easily view her notifications.
”Blaaaaah, why can’t I turn down my brightness quicker?”
Cry no more, fedora-wearing hipster. With the new Control Center, you can quickly adjust Wi-Fi settings, brightness and volume.
And my absolute favorite part that I noticed: a little flashlight icon. Am I the only one who needs a flashlight right then and there and having to find my Flashlight app and turn it on gives me a mini panic attack? No? Okay…
”I am going to throw my phone in the dumpster if I don’t have photo filters.”
Pick up that phone! With an updated Camera app, you now have a multitude of pretentious, vintage filters. I didn’t think the filters were that necessary because I’m a heavy Instagram user who has to wean myself off using excessive filters.
”Weh, Pandora is just awful.”
iTunes Radio is your answer, but it is basically just like Pandora. I won’t be using this feature that much because I put all my faith into Spotify. For ten dollars a month, you can have access to any song, anywhere and without ads for Pampers blaring after each song.
”Siri hates me, and I hate her.”
That’s no way to treat your handy dandy digital assistant who messes up every text message and has no suitable restaurant recommendations. Maybe in iOS 7, she’ll get it right. Or he! The software is introducing a male voice that’s hopefully a mix of Morgan Freeman and some hot British guy. Fingers crossed.
I rarely use Siri because of the lack of information she can provide without having to do a web search. And instead of searching for “movie show times on Friday night,” she decides to give me results for “moving slowly fiber light.” Yes, Siri, exactly. But now, the new and improved Siri searches Wikipedia and Bing (ugh) and can return calls or check voicemails.
“Siri, Wikipedia ‘koala bears.’”
”THIS IS THE FOURTH TIME APPLE MAPS HAS TAKEN ME TO WRONG TACO BELL.”
I feel you, exasperated soccer mom. After Google Maps came along, I ditched the buggy Apple Maps that was highly anticipated. But the only thing I got out of it was glitches upon glitches.
With iOS 7, Maps get a big update, hopefully with technical improvements. As a college student who still gets lost on campus even after two years, the new turn-by-turn walking feature will be a tardy saver.
”Wait…doesn’t everything look a lot like Windows 8 and Android?”
Yes. And I like it. I can appreciate the beauty and simplicity of the two competing softwares, and now that Apple is taking the best elements of the two, I can be a happy little iPhone-Windows 8-Android user.
So, for now, I’ll just continue to wait and hold back my tears until the fall. Who’s with me?
