James Gandolfini: family, friends and co-stars gather to remember ‘Sopranos’ star

Today in New York, family, friends and co-stars of James Gandolfini gathered at the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine to remember The Sopranos star.

According to Fox News, some of the famous faces seen filing into the church included Steve Buscemi, Alec Baldwin and wife Hilaria Thomas, Dick Cavett and other Sopranos castmembers.

David Chase, who created The Sopranos, is one of four speakers set for the funeral. Gandolfini’s widow Deborah Lin Gandolfini and two family friends will also speak.

The New York Times notes that fans from around the country made the treck to the funeral. “He made the character of Tony Soprano feel like a real person, like someone you knew. When I heard he had died I hoped it was a hoax,” Gwen Gibbs of Kentucky told the Times.

Gandolfini was born and raised in New Jersey, so Gov. Chris Christie was set to attend the funeral. Christie ordered that flags be lowered to half staff on June 24 to honor Gandolfini.

According to The New York Daily News, on Wednesday, the family held a private wake in PArk Ridge, NJ, where Gandolfini grew up.

Gandolfini died of a heart attack last Wednesday. He was only 51-years-old. The actor played Tony Soprano on The Sopranos and recently starred in Zero Dark Thirty.
