Man of Steel, the long-awaited Superman reboot is one of the most highly anticipated movies of the summer. There were many people hoping that this would be the movie to bring life back to the Superman franchise. The anticipation for this film has been brewing for over a year, since the teaser trailer for the film was released with last summer’s fellow superhero film, The Dark Knight Rises. The addition of a few more trailers along with a large amount of advanced ticket sales, this movie was primed to make a strong surge at the box office. There were some who thought that the early mixed reviews of the film by critics would have an effect on the opening weekend at the box office; I personally felt that people were excited to see this movie, regardless of what the critics were saying.
However, the early mixed reviews of the critics had no affect on the “Man of Steel’s” return to the big screen. Man of Steel posted the largest June opening weekend ever, grossing $113.1 million over the weekend. This was the second biggest opening weekend of 2013, falling only behind Iron Man 3. The impressive debut also dethroned Toy Story 3’s reign as the largest opening weekend in June.
The film is on pace to gross over $300 million domestically, while many are anxious to see how the film fairs in the international market. The film currently has a 57% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a number that may surprise some people. The main complaints that I have heard about the film is the lack of a plot and too many CGI effects. I was one of the many people who went and saw the film at midnight and while I agree the film has flaws, it is a very entertaining and exciting movie and it is definitely worth seeing in theaters. If you can, I would spend a few extra dollars to experience the film in IMAX 3D which makes the visuals in the film look absolutely stunning.
