Netflix said Thursday night that it has renewed Orange is the New Black, a new show focusing on women in prison, for a second season. The news comes two weeks before the show’s series premiere on July 11.
Deadline broke the news and Netflix later confirmed it on Twitter. The comedy based on Piper Kerman’s memoir comes from Weeds creator Jenji Kohan and Lionsgate TV. Netflix ordered 13 more episodes to follow the 13 that will premiere in July.
“I am thrilled that Netflix has extended my sentence,” Kohan said in a statement.
According to TV Guide, Taylor Schilling stars as Piper Chapman, a woman who has to delay her engagement because she’s just been sentenced to a federal prison. The rest of the cast includes Jason Biggs, Natasha Lyonne, Kate Mulgrew and Taryn Manning.
Netflix has had success so far with its original series. Lilyhammer, House of Cards and Hemlock Grove have all earned second seasons. The streaming service also launched a fourth season of Arrested Development and is reportedly looking to order another season.
