Roseanne Barr has been trying to get back on television for well over a year now and she might finally get her wish. The former Roseanne star is reportedly nearing a deal to star in an NBC sitcom that could be the test of the 10/90 plan on network television.
Deadline first broke the news, confirming that the family comedy is being developed with Nurse Jackie co-creator Linda Wallem. It will be produced by Universal TV, but the network is interested in testing the 10/90 plan, which was developed by Lionsgate’s Debmar-Mercury for Tyler Perry’s TBS sitcoms and Anger Management.
This is the plan where if the first 10 episodes reach certain ratings thresholds, the network will automatically order another 90 episodes. That would bring the show up to a syndication-friendly 100 episodes. It hasn’t been tested on network TV yet, so this is an interesting scheme for the network. Barr’s Roseanne is still a popular show in syndication and ran 221 episodes.
The plan is also being used for a Kelsey Grammer/Martin Lawrence sitcom and another with George Lopez.
Barr was working with NBC in early 2012 on a pilot called Downwardly Mobile, but it didn’t get picked up, even though John Goodman co-starred in it. 20th Century Fox TV produced that pilot.
