Khalid Sheikh Mohammed (picture below), confessed mastermind of the 9/11 attacks and U.S. prisoner, was tortured for years as he was moved from prison to prison, eventually ending in Guantanamo Bay. Though Mohammed was captured in 2003, the military has only just begun legal proceedings against him. In the meantime, Mohammed has reportedly been designing a vacuum cleaner.
The Independent explains the perplexing story of the al-Qaida operative as an unconfirmed rehabilitation attempt. Before acting as a terrorist, Mohammed attended a U.S. university and studied mechanical engineering. The U.S. views him as a valuable asset, potential witness, and mine of information; the vacuum cleaner may be part of an effort to keep him sane.
“It sounds ridiculous, but confirming or denying the very existence of a vacuum cleaner design…. would apparently expose US citizens to exceptionally grave danger,” says his current military lawyer, Jason Wright. But it's known that Saddam Hussein tended plants before his execution, possibly for the same reason, writes NewYorker . And while some Guantanamo Bay prisoners have gone insane, therapy seems to have worked in the case of Mohammed, who is well enough to give lectures to fellow inmates.
It’s still a far cry from justice in Guantanamo Bay, where only 6 of the 166 prisoners have been charge and the government does not plan to ever charge some.
