Since her secret marriage to NFL star Nnamdi Asomugha in June, as reported by TheCelebrityCafe.com, Scandal star Kerry Washington feels “blessed” with new hubby and her first Emmy nomination this Thursday.
Washington, 32, earned her nomination for her role as crisis manager Olivia Pope on ABC’s political drama, Scandal. When she learned of her nomination, she was simply overjoyed.
“"I'm the luckiest broad in showbiz," Washington said, according to People. She continued, "I just feel really blessed and humbled and grateful for this nomination."
The nomination for her role on Scandal, known for character Pope’s complicated professional and romantic relationship with the President of the United States and the secret inner workings of Washington, D.C. not only be Washington’s first Emmy nomination, but will also mark her as the first African American woman to be nominated for best drama actress in the past 18 years, and the fifth in Emmy history.
Washington told Hollywood Reporter, “I'm grateful to be in the company of the actresses I'm in the company of -- including Alfre Woodard and Debbie Allen. I feel really proud to live in a world where a show like Scandal people can see survive and succeed not just in the U.S. but overseas. I had someone from a Japanese network tell me how exited they are to have a woman of color from the U.S. in Japanese homes. … It's wonderful when the stories we engage in with the audience in such an intimate way are inclusive and diverse on a lot of levels. Our show is inclusive not only with race but also age, sexual orientation and with gender. It's really exciting."
She was given the news today while at an airport in Northern California, and did not exactly have time to celebrate. She was on ironically on her way to Los Angeles for the first reading of Scandal’s new season.
"I had my dog with me and I was trying to get water for the plane in that hurried, crazy airport mode. I'm going to celebrate with my Scandal family after we have our table today," Washington said.
So with these new blessings in Washington’s life, the next question is who will accompany her to the September 22nd Emmy ceremony in Los Angeles, Asomugha or her parents?
"I have not decided who will be my date," Washington said. "That was my parents question this morning! We'll see.”
