Robert Griffin III is cleared to play Redskins season opener

Good news for Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III! The 23-year-old will return for the Redskins’ new season following his knee injury.

The news came after the team’s 30-12 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Thursday night, which rounded out their preseason with a 4-0 record.

After tearing his ACL last season, the quarterback has been cleared to play in the season opener next week by his orthopedic surgeon James Andrews, according to a report by the Washington Post.

“I did talk to Doctor Andrews, and Doctor Andrews, after talking to him, he’s going to approve Robert to play,” Redskins Head Coach Mike Shanahan said in the report.

Though Andrews cleared him, he still had “a couple of concerns," according to Shanahan. "I’ll talk to Robert over the weekend, and I’ll let you guys know on Monday.”

Andrews watched Griffin during the pregame workout and later examined his knee before delivering the good news to the player and the team. The NFL reported that Griffin has “looked sharp and explosive in practices by all accounts”, so Thursday’s news comes at no surprise to Griffin or the team despite Andrews' concerns.

Surprise or not, Griffin sent out an excited tweet to his fans after he received the news:

The Redskins will open their season with a game against the Philadelphia Eagles on September 9.
