Shailene Woodley on the 'terrifying' side of fame

Shailene Woodley is promoting indie film The Spectacular Now and gearing up to make her grand entrance as Mary Jane in rebooted The Amazing Spider Man franchise, but despite critical acclaim and success beyond ABC Family’s teen drama The Secret Life of the American Teenager , Woodley is hesitant to consider her life one of fame and fortune.

"I have a very, very fun life outside of this industry, so if anything were to not happen or if things got to be way too overwhelming ... I will go and be an herbalist," the 21-year-old told The Huffington Post . Though she describes herself as "a crazy positive person by nature," the actress admitted nervousness at the upcoming release of Divergent , a silver screen adaptation of a popular series of books. With The Hunger Games success within the realm of possibility, Woodley has been forced to consider how her career could take off to new heights.

"I'll never, ever think of myself as famous, even if I ever get to the point of George Clooney ... because I think you might go crazy if you start referring to yourself in those terms," she explains, trying to avoid use of the “f-word,” or famous. “But the main thing for me is just, I'm me, and I live such an amazing life which I'm so lucky for and I have such amazing friends and the perfect family ... that I don't see anything changing."

Woodley grounds herself in her appreciation and care for our planet, sharing inspirational quotes and photos regularly on her Twitter page. When asked to appear on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon , the actress spent her time on air talking about flowers she picked while out and about in New York City and her enthusiasm for herbal teas.

"I was able to talk about something that I love on a show that generally doesn't talk about things like that, so there's ways to have fun with it," she says of her Fallon interview. "It's cool to be in a position where I can maybe start shifting the views on what it means to be a young actor and what it means to be in this industry."

Despite apprehension about diving into the film industry and surrendering herself to stereotypical Hollywood life, Woodley is taking the necessary steps to further her career, including losing her on-screen virginity in her highly-anticipated and “so real” coming-of-age film The Spectacular Now . However, the young actress maintains that the shift to more adult films or participation in not one but two mega film franchises will not turn her into a modern-day celebrity, a life she finds “terrifying.”

"There's this obsession in our society and in our culture about actors," she says. "The magazines and the excess and red carpets and the heels, they're kind of terrifying. I'm able to handle it and it's fun and I can enjoy it, but it's terrifying on a human level, just looking at our culture and thinking, ‘In 50 years are we going to look back to this moment in time and roll our eyes?'"
