A teenage model plane enthusiast was killed Thursday afternoon when one of the remote controlled planes he was flying struck him in the head and killed him.
19-year-old Roman Pirozek Jr was at Calvert Vaux Park in New York Thursday afternoon with his father, operating one of his model planes. Pirozek was performing a trick with the $2,000 plane when it struck him, slicing off the top of his head and part of his shoulder, according to a report by NBC New York.
Pirozek reportedly flew planes with his father every weekend. He “was known to be aggressive in his flying and often executed tricks,” a law enforcement official on the scene told the Wallstreet Journal.
Calvert Vaux Park is a designated area for flying planes. Along with Pirozek’s father, there were reportedly three or four others in the park when the 19-year-old was hit.
“He was the best person ever. He had the biggest heart,” Pirozek’s sister, Amy Pirozek, also told the Journal. “I think he was just doing it because it was his day off.”
Pirozek showed his passion for model airplanes on his Youtube channel, where he posted videos like the one below, of him operating his planes.
"It's unreal, someone that young, that full of life, enjoying something, is gone," family friend Dino Spadaccini told NBC New York in the same report. "It's an unbelievable tragedy."
