Hailee Steinfield graces the cover of Teen Vogue and proves she’s Hollywood’s next big thing

If you haven’t heard of Hailee Steinfield yet, this won’t be the last time you’ll hear of her. The sixteen-year-old made her big-screen acting debut in 2010, portraying the role of Mattie Ross in True Grit, and she’s been talked about ever since. She was nominated for an Academy Award after that performance and won other numerous awards, including a nomination for a BAFTA award for Best Actress in a Leading Role. After that success, her career has skyrocketed.

Hailee sat down with Teen Vogue Style Features Director, Andrew Bevan, and opened up about her newfound fame, roles, and style. Her new movies, a remake of Romeo and Juliet and Ender’s Game will be coming out later this year, and we can’t wait!

Hailee Steinflied has been a favorite on the red carpet and always impresses with her wardrobe choices. She’s often seen wearing Chanel and Kenzo, and has a unique style sense. The Californian beat out 15,000 girls for the part in True Grit and became the face of Miu Miu two years later. When she was only 14-years-old, she competed against esteemed actresses Helena Bohman Carter and Amy Adams for an Oscar. You might think this child star would probably have let fame got to her head, with Taylor Swift as a BFF and a seriously impressive resume, but Andrew Bevan tells us that Hailee is “just like you." We learn that she’s no diva, really down-to-earth, and is an opportunist who is grateful for everything that comes her way. Bevan shares, “she makes the midtown living room feel as casual as your parents’ basement.” Her ability to be able to relate to anyone is probably why she’s been so successful and is liked in the Hollywood industry. Hailee acknowledges, “Whether I’m a bit of an old soul or not, I am who I am, and that doesn’t change, whether I’m with adults or with my friends.” The star who likes to let loose with friends by going on shopping sprees and having dance parties says she has “the best of both worlds.”

After the success of True Grit, it took a while before Hailee landed the role of Juliet in Julian Fellowes (creator of Downtown Abbey) adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. She even got to work alongside British model and actor Douglas Booth, which is probably every girl’s fantasy. The movie was filmed in Italy and the actress recalls how the role helped with her schoolwork because she was reading the play for a class at the same time. Balancing Hollywood, superstardom, and still keeping up with her studies shows how dedicated and hardworking this young star is.

In her next upcoming role, Hailee will be staring in a science fiction film playing a teen soldier and has Harrison Ford to help her along the way. Her movie Ender’s Game is based on a 1980’s book series. Hailee also got to work with sixteen-year-old Asa Butterfield. She shares, “I was waiting for the opportunity to come along where I could work with people my own age…it was became three months of just pure fun.”

Hailee has seven films in post-production and a “reputation for head-turning,” whether it’s on-screen or on the red carpet. At only sixteen, there is no doubt that this star has an astounding career ahead of her and will be a household name soon. Though she admits it’s been competitive, the star concludes the interview with how she’s been compared to other actresses her age, saying that she truly believes that everything happens for a reason: “There’s a part out there for everyone, and if it’s meant to be, it will be.”
