Jennette McCurdy’s mother dies of cancer

21-year-old Nickelodeon star Jennette McCurdy and her family suffered a tragedy today, with the loss of Jennette’s mother Debra McCurdy.

McCurdy’s mother had been battling with breast cancer for 17 years. Her cancer had gone into remission after she had been battling with it for 15 years but it returned again in 2010, spreading throughout her body and into her brain, Hollywood Life reports.

The news has devastated McCurdy, according to TMZ, as she was extremely close to her mother.

Nickelodeon gave a statement to Hollywood Life, in which they expressed their condolences to McCurdy and her family in their hard time:

“We are deeply saddened to learn that Debbie McCurdy, Jennette McCurdy’s mother, passed away. Much like her daughter, Debbie’s strength was an inspiration to everyone who knew her, especially those of us at Nickelodeon who considered her family. Our heartfelt thoughts go out to Jennette and her loved ones.”

McCurdy was supposed to host the Nickelodeon event “Worldwide Day of Play” this weekend, during which the station goes dark for three hours of the day and children are encouraged to spend their time playing outdoors. TMZ reports that McCurdy has stepped away from her hosting duties in order to grieve for her mother.
