'The Legend of Korra' Recap: Civil Wars Part 2

Well that escalated quickly didn't it? While I really enjoyed the first season of Korra, one of the issues I had with it was was how quickly it seemed to burn through it's story. When the show was originally picked up, the order was only for one 12-episode season. This meant they had a lot of story to get through and not a lot of time to do it. After the success of the first season, Nickelodeon expanded to series to a total of 52 episodes. Fans hoped the show would slow down a bit and take it's time telling the rest of Korra's story. After this latest episode it doesn't seem like that's the case.

We pick up right where we left off as Korra's parents are being taken away to stand trial. Korra pleads with Unalaq to free her parents and he refuses. All the arrested souther water tribe citizens are put on trial together. The judge finds Senna innocent but sentences the rest of the accused to death, including Korra's father. Korra is ready to attack the judge, but Unalaq intervenes and convinces the judge to change their sentence to life in in prison. Korra and her mother visit Tonraq in prison and Korra is not happy. She hops on Naga and quickly chases down the judge as drives north. The judge is so scared he makes the reveal what we've all be waiting for.

Everything that Unalaq as told Korra is lie. The trial was a sham and even Tonraq's exile was masterminded by Unalaq. Even though this reveal was telegraphed since the first episode, I was surprised by how quickly the truth came out. Once the truth is out the episode really kicks into high gear. Korra wastes no time confronting Unalaq. He maintains that everything he's done is for the good of the tribe and to help her fullfil her destiny. A small battle between them breaks out when Unalaq reveals he's moving the prisoners to the north and Korra quickly takes him down with some strong airbending. Korra teams up with Varrick, who's been hiding in a fake platypus bear this entire time, and they make a run to save her father.

Team Korra breaks through the blockade with and use Varrick's plane to catch up to the ship containing the prisoners. They easily free the prisoners and Korra explains the situation to Tonraq. Tonraq decides that it's time for action and time to take his brother down. Korra is ready to jump in and help the south, but her father gives her a more important mission: travel to republic city, speak to the president, and have the united forces join the south.

Meanwhile, at the Southern Air Temple, the mystery of the missing Ikki is solved. It turns out she was in a cave hanging out with some baby sky bison. This plot-line definitely feels like it was for the kids and that's ok. I'm sure Aang's family with be involved in the main conflict very soon.

The Legend of Korra airs Fridays at 7pm on Nickelodeon
