The new nail trend straight from Fashion Week

The purpose of New York Fashion Week is for designers to showcase their collections for the upcoming Spring-Summer 2014 season. But, the nail designs that go along with each collection show off what’s hot for this season, one of which being negative space.

On Wednesday, Kathleen Kye, the Creative Director of the South Korean brand KYE, presented her collection at The Standard High Line in downtown New York City. As 13 male and female models stood on a stage in different looks, press and guests got a sneak peek of KYE’s post-school violence fashion—and I was one of them.

Rose Velez-Miggins, the nail artist from Gel II who created the designs for the presentation, talked to me about why she chose negative space for the models.

“It’s classic with an edge,” she said about the design. “Less is more.”

Velez-Miggins was inspired by one of the white skirts from the collection that had two slits on the bottom. After showing Kye about a dozen different designs during the test meeting, Kye liked the idea of using white nail polish with negative space.

Negative space is basically a technique used to show the natural nail pigment instead of using polish. The nail can be shown by using a thin brush with nail polish remover to remove some color to create lines or waves. It can also be created by using a thin piece of scotch tape or the basic nail white strips, such as the ones used for French manicures.

For the show, Velez-Miggins used Gel II Shine Xtreme in Arctic White and the Shine Xtreme Top Coat which can be found on the website geltwo.com.
