Following the conviction of four men in India for raping and murdering a young woman, the victim’s family has called for the death penalty and top officials have voiced their agreement.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the attack occurred on a bus in December and started a debate on sexual assault and violence against women in India—with many saying death sentences would help to solve the problem. Prosecutors said they would push for the death penalty in the sentencing hearing on Wednesday. Previously, life in prison had been the maximum sentence for rape, but a new law passed in March changed that to capital punishment for certain cases, making the death penalty a legal, and possible, sentence for the convicted men.
The victim’s mother made clear that seeking the death sentence for the men who killed and raped her daughter was not about revenge, rather, she said, “If they don’t get the death penalty after committing a crime like this, there will be no end to such crimes.”
The Times of India compiled a list of reactions of those in support of the death penalty, with many proclaiming it was more than rape, it was also a case of “extreme brutality,” the kind that “definitely merits [the] death penalty.”
