In this week’s episode we follow Mako and Asami on an investigation inspired by classic film noir. Meanwhile Bolin finally has something to do as the star of Varrick’s new “movers.” Finally, we find out what happened to Korra after last week’s exciting cliffhanger.
It’s always interesting when a show decides to sideline it’s main character for most, or all, of an episode. The strength of this type of episodes always hinges on the supporting cast and what they get up to without the main character. Korra has a solid supporting cast and has plenty for them to do. After a classic cold open where a Southern Water Tribe Ship is attacked by waterbenders we get our only Unalaq sighting of the episode. Eska and Desna are waiting to meet their father who surprises them by walking out of some type of portal. “Did you just come from the spirit world?” asks Desna, but we don’t get a solid answer. Bolin attends the premiere of his first “mover” with Varrick and Zhu Li. Varrick’s movers are inspired by classic film serials like Flash Gordon. Bolin stars as Nuktuk: Hero of the South and all the attention and success quickly goes to his head. He’s so wrapped up in himself that he can’t be bothered to help Mako with his investigation, choosing instead to take a “dippity-dip” in his new hot tub.
Mako’s investigation takes up the bulk of the episode and it’s nice to see Mako have something to do other than disagree with Korra. He teams up with Asami after trying to convince Chief Beifong and the detectives at the police station that things aren’t quite adding up with the attacks. With no police help, and no Bolin, Mako hits the streets and goes to his old gang, the Triple Threat Triad, for help. The take a bait ship out on the see to try and draw out another attack. Mako discovers that the Triple Threats have been paid to keep him and Asami away from the city for as long as possible. Asami and Mako make a run back to city with the Triple Threats in pursuit. We get our first bit of action on this boat chase and Mako and Asami make it back to the city. They rush to Asami’s warehouse and discover that all of her remaining inventory has been stolen.
Mako pays a visit to the set of Varrick’s movers and discovers that the special effects crew is using the same type of remote detonator he found at the scene at the first attack. These detonators are a Varrick Industries exclusive. Armed with this information, Mako rushes to see Asami only to discover that she’s just sold a controlling interest in Future Industries to Varrick. We leave them and get our first glimpse of Korra in this episode. She’s washed up on a fire nation shore and has no idea who she is.
The Legend of Korra airs on Friday at 8:30 pm on Nickelodeon.
