'AHS: Coven' Recap: Fearful Pranks Ensue

What a perfect episode to air on Halloween! Between witches and *spoiler alert* zombies, there was a full cast of creepy characters in Oct. 30's episode.

To recap:

1. Fiona really is "the baddest witch in town" -- and the Council is on to her!
Surely Fiona (Jessica Lange) didn't think she could get away with not one, but two Supreme deaths while she was alive. We learned in last week's episode that she killed her own mother, the former Supreme, before killing Madison (Emma Roberts), who she believed to be the next Supreme. So when the Council appears at Miss Robichaux's Academy for Exceptional Young Ladies, Myrtle (Frances Conroy) wants Fiona to be burned at the stake. Maybe not literally (well, probably), but she sure wants to prove that Fiona is responsible for Madison's death.

But here's the best part: Madison was never the next Supreme! Cordelia (Sarah Paulson) found out that she had a heart murmur and since the new Supreme is always in good health, Madison was never meant to steal Fiona's spot.

2. Fiona got your tongue?
We also learned in last week's episode that Spalding (Denis O'Hare), Fiona's loyal butler, witnessed Fiona's killing of the two Supremes, but of course he wouldn't tattle on her because he doesn't have a tongue! Just when we thought Fiona was the one to cut his tongue, instead we found out Spalding himself cut out his tongue to protect Fiona. In a flashback, a rival of Fiona's at the Academy cast a spell on Spalding to make his tongue tell the truth when he would be questioned about the Supreme's killing. He overhears, and right before he cuts off his tongue he spills his last words to Fiona which were: "I have always loved you."

3. So what is Spalding's deal?
Other than his love for Fiona and wanting to protect her, we also found out another hobby of his in tonight's episode -- playing dress up with Madison's dead body! Yeah, amongst the hundred dolls he owns (anyone else think he and A from Pretty Little Liars would get along?) he made up a dead Madison and was dressing her up just as he would his dolls!

4. Witches Go To War
Fiona sent Marie (Angela Bassett) a cold message by delivering the bull/her lover's head in a box after he tried to kill Queenie (Gabourey Sidibe), clearly trying to show Marie who's on top. Marie is more than ever on a quest for revenge, and she sure showed us her strength as well. She raised the graves of the dead to attack the Academy, which we might add was the perfect Halloween twist, but better yet, the three zombies that appeared at the doorstep just happened to be Madame LaLaurie's (Kathy Bates) dead daughters that Marie killed! How's that for a Happy Halloween?

5. You better watch your back, Cordelia!
It took four episodes before we fully became invested in Cordelia's character, and tonight we learned a thing or two about her as a character along with her seemingly perfect husband who's also a ladykiller. First, Delia talks just a bit too much. When the Council approached the Academy about Madison's death/disappearance she also opened up about Queenie's assault and her visit to Marie. Oops. Second, some hooded figure attacked her in the bathroom by spraying something painful in her eyes and we're left until next week to find out the damage which doesn't look good. Third, Fiona is absolutely right about her husband Hank (Josh Hamilton)-- that there's something about him that reeks of lies. While he was on the phone with Delia saying he had a meeting with a businessman, he actually had a meeting with a woman. A beautiful red-head woman, Kaley (Alexandra Breckenridge), who he met online. After some pretty rough and intense sexy time, Kaley asks Hank not to break her heart. Instead, he breaks her brains as he fires a bullet right through her neck. We knew there was something off about him!

6. The One That Got Away
Though Zoe (Taissa Farmiga) and Kyle (Evan Peters) had the smallest bit of screen time this week, it was just enough to show that Kyle, covered in his mother's blood, escaped straight out of the house and is now wandering around somewhere amongst the other zombies. At least he'll (kinda) blend in.
