'The Colbert Report' Recap: Tom Hanks

On this episode of The Colbert Report, Stephen discussed truckers, twitter, campaign ads and interviewed Tom Hanks.

Today is day nine of the US government shutdown and Stephen briefly mentioned it at the beginning of the episode. He stated that no news is good news. Therefore, he said that there was news.

He talked about President Obama holding a one-hour press conference. Then Representative John Boehner held a conference responding. Boehner stated that he wanted to have a conversation at table. He said that nothing was on or off the table. Stephen said that Boehner’s speech taught the important point that he wanted a table.

Because of the shutdown (and conversations about tables), a group of truckers are going to drive to Washington D.C. and tie up traffic. As Stephen pointed out, the truckers were going to make a literal gridlock in the nation’s capital.

Stephen said that he understood the truckers and that they understand him because the picture on their website was a picture of Stephen riding an eagle. He said that the painting was paint by number and the number was “USA number one” and that he liked that.

To mock the truckers, Stephen put on a trucker hat and spoke into the radio, calling himself truck nuts and speaking nonsense. He then showed a clip of one of the truckers saying that millions of people would be there, however, only 3,000 were arriving Friday morning.

The truckers’ demands? They demanded that President Obama be impeached.

Stephen then stated that he was a huge fan of Twitter. He liked it when it was a place to talk about Ashton Kutcher’s trucker hats and now Ashton Kutcher’s beard. Twitter, the company, was making its first IBO plan. And Stephen told the audience that investors accidently put money into the company Tweeter instead of Twitter.

Also relating to Twitter, Gianfranco Ravasi said that Jesus had the first twitter. Stephen joked that it was where the hip people go and that Jesus was hip. According to Ravasi, Jesus had the first tweet because he used short phrases that were shorter than 140 characters such as “love one another.” Stephen mocked him saying that, Jesus actually said, “Luv 1 anthr #YOLF [you only live forever] #OMM [oh my me]”

Continuing, Stephen stated that Jesus wasn’t the only man in the bible that was into cool things. Eve was the first person to play Fruit Ninja. Plus, Stephen stated that Jesus never made money and neither did Twitter.

The final topic that Stephen covered was a campaign commercial. It was a hilarious story. Stephen stated that it was almost time for midterm elections where people are competing for jobs in a government that no longer exists.

Michele Bachmann will not be running and Stephen made his typical Bachmann staring at something joke. The bit wasn’t about Bachmann, rather a man that was running for her spot.

Tom Emmer is a man running and his campaign commercial caused a stir because it was outrageous and illegal. In the commercial, he advertises for Integrity, a landscaping and renovating company. This is illegal.

Because it was illegal, Emmer said that he didn’t know that it was a coordinated ad and that he regretted making it. He said that he had no intention to use it as an advertisement.

Stephen questioned how this would happen. However, a young child appeared at his desk and said that he was thirsty. Stephen made a fake Sunny D commercial. At the end of it, he told the audience to vote for Chris Christie.

Stephen interviewed Tom Hanks about his new film, Captain Phillips. The interview as absolutely hilarious. Hanks has a really great sense of humor. They discussed how there was no second amendment on the sea. Hanks told Stephen that he was interested in nonfiction films and books. It was a great interview.

This was a really awesome episode of The Colbert Report. It was great from beginning to end. Bravo, Colbert.
