An undercover New York City police officer was a witness for the SUV attack by a gang of motorcyclists last Sunday, and chose to do nothing about it.
In the attack, a group of 20-30 bikers attacked an SUV and assaulted the driver, Alexian Lien, repeatedly. Lien and his family were driving through Manhattan to celebrate their wedding anniversary when he accidentally bumped into one of the motorcyclists, causing the whole scene. The officer was a witness when Lien was pulled from his vehicle and beaten.
According to ABC News, the officer did not admit that he witnessed the incident until days after it happened. The unidentified undercover narcotics cop was riding a motorcycle as well, and his involvement is under investigation.
New evidence has been surfacing through additional video footage and photos as well as witness accounts. Investigators continue to study the evidence.
The Daily News reports that the NYPD detective was moved to desk duty after he admitted that he was at the scene and didn't call for backup. He said he didn't want to give up his cover, claiming that someone else had called the police. Officers, even undercover officials, do have an obligation to help in emergencies.
The detective was one of four police officers who were riding with the motorcycle gang before the attack occurred. It is unclear what role they played in the incident, but no matter what, he should have come clean about his part in the event immediately after the fact.
The prime suspect has not yet come forward, but two others have been charged for their connection in the attack. Biker Edwin Mieses is still recovering in the hospital after being run over by the SUV.
