‘Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition’ Recap: Divas in the House

This week on Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition, the dancers brought out their inner divas as they concentrated on performance. But at the end of the night, one diva would be taking her final bow.

Since Rachelle used her call-back card to save Trinity last week, there were still five competitors left on the show. For their diva-themed challenge, the girls would be dance battling the biggest little diva of them all – Asia from last season of AUDC and Dance Moms.

JoJo thought this would be her week because performance has always been her strength, but she was kicked out of the challenge when she mimicked Asia’s moves instead of coming up with her own. Gianna was kicked out too for laughing as little Asia danced. “Asia dances like a little kid who had too many pixie sticks at the club,” Gianna said. Trinity was eliminated too, leaving McKaylee and Kalani as the final two.

After another dance off, Kalani was the challenge winner. As her prize, she would get to choose her routine and then also pick the next girl who would get choose, who would pick the next girl, etc. Abby called the system a “diva chain.”

Kalani picked a sassy jazz routine and chose JoJo to pick next. JoJo picked the hip hop duet, Trinity also picked the hip hop duet, McKaylee chose a contemporary solo, and that left Gianna with the last solo, an upbeat number.

Abby didn’t think that the dancers made the right choices for themselves. She thought Kalani should have chosen the slower contemporary solo and JoJo should have picked anything but the duet, since she has trouble keeping up with the older dancers.

We had to wait and see if they could change Abby’s mind on performance night. Gianna’s solo, called “Let Them Eat Cake,” was the first dance of the night. She portrayed Marie Antoinette in a pink ruffley dress and brought the attitude like a true diva, smearing frosting from the cake prop on her face at the end of the routine. I thought it was one of her greatest performances, and the judges agreed. Richy and Rachelle just loved it, but of course Abby pointed out some technical issues and told Gianna that her shoes were dirty.

McKaylee’s solo based on another historical diva, Cleopatra, was up next. For the dance, called “Queen of the Nile,” McKaylee wore a wig of sleek black hair and a gold dress. She certainly channeled Cleopatra with her queenly presence and graceful moves. Richy loved the dance and gave McKaylee the coveted finger wave. Even Abby admitted to McKaylee, “Tonight you were a diva.” Watch her full dance in the video below!

I wouldn’t want to have to go after that! But Kalani had no choice as she hit the stage with her “Movie Star” solo. It was sassy and cute, and Kalani danced great as usual, but it wasn’t my favorite routine of the night. When Kalani hit the final pose, Abby still wished she had chosen a different solo to do.

In the final performance of the night, JoJo and Trinity performed “Down N Dirt Divas” in their hip hop duet. Trinity definitely outshined JoJo the whole time. Her performance was so captivating that I couldn’t take my eyes off of her; I almost forgot JoJo was there! The judges seemed to agree with me. They thought Trinity blew it out of the water, and JoJo just wasn’t that great in comparison.

With all the call-back cards used up, someone was definitely going home this week. Gianna and McKaylee were told that they were safe first because they killed it with their solos. Trinity was safe, too, because of her awesome hip hop performance. That left Kalani and JoJo as the bottom two.

After letting them hang for a while, Abby announced that it was JoJo who would be going home. Despite being 9 years old, I thought JoJo showed great maturity as she thanked Abby for the opportunity and didn’t even shed a tear. Cindy smirked behind her – she had wanted JoJo gone for weeks now.

The four remaining competitors will go “down the rabbit hole” next week with some trippy fantasy dances. Don’t miss it next Tuesday on Lifetime!
