Andy Warhol painting sells for a record breaking $105 million at auction

Andy Warhol’s 1963 painting “Silver Car Crash (Double Disaster)” went for $105 million Wednesday at a New York art auction. The painting now holds Warhol’s record for highest selling price at auction.

The 8-by-13 foot painting portrays scenes just after a car crash, including a twisted body thrown about the car’s interior. According to The Washington Post, the public has only seen this work once in the past 26 years. So far, the painting’s buyer, who dished out an incredible $105.4 million for the work, has not been identified.

Warhol’s previous auction record was $71.1 million for “Green Car Crash (Green Burning Car I), NBC News reports.

His more iconic works including “Coca-Cola (3)” and his portrait of Elizabeth Taylor, “Liz,” also sold this week for $57.2 million and $20 million respectively.

Warhol’s record is impressive, but the day before, the most expensive work of art ever sold at auction went for $142.4 million. That day more than $691.5 million worth of art sold at auction, making it the highest one day total in auction history.
