Carrie Underwood responds to Twitter backlash on role in 'The Sound of Music, Live!'

Carrie Underwood is cast as Maria von Trapp for the upcoming remake, The Sound of Music, Live!, and people are already expressing their criticism and disapproval of the country singer playing the part on Twitter.

"I get hate tweets and stuff like, 'You're not Julie Andrews!'" Underwood told Entertainment Weekly. "I know I'm not Julie. Nobody is and I would never pretend that I was…I know my place."

Although so many fans of the classic musical have criticized the casting of Underwood for the role of Maria von Trapp in the remake, Julie Andrews herself supported the 30-year-old country singer.

"Fifty years later, it's time somebody had another crack at it. I had the best time of my life doing it and it did wonderful things for me," she said to Zap2it. "I think it's great that it's being done again, but doing it live must be so daunting."

Joining Underwood for the live airing will be True Blood's Stephen Moyer as Capt. Georg Von Trapp, Laura Benati as Elsa Schrader, Private Practice star Audra McDonald as Mother Abbess and Smash actor Christian Borle as Max Detweiler.

The Sound of Music, Live! will air Thursday, Dec. 5 on NBC.
