Country singer dies in Nashville bar shooting

A country singer died in a shooting that took place in a downtown Nashville bar Saturday morning.

According to The Tennessean, Wayne Mills, 44, was shot and killed the owner of the Nashville bar Pit and Barrel bar Chris Ferrell. After Mills was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center and pronounced dead, Ferrell claimed that he shot Mills in self-defense when the two got in an argument over Mills smoking in a non-smoking section of the bar.

“We’re investigating Chris Ferrell’s claims of self-defense,” said Kris Mumford, a police spokeswoman. So far, no arrests have been made.

Ferrell has been arrested twice in the past for driving with a suspended license. The Associated Press reports that Ferrell did own a proper hand gun license. Mills also had a prior arrest record.

Mills was touring with the Wayne Mills Band. Band manager J.R. Smith created the Wayne Mills Family Fund to collect donations for Mills' wife and young son.

Country singer Blake Shelton took to Twitter Sunday to express his sorrow over Mills' death.
