You would be hard pressed to find someone who has never seen the 1965 classic film The Sound of Music. Even more difficult a task, to find someone who doesn’t love it. The iconic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical is now being given new life by NBC who is airing a live televised staging of the show on December 5. There are plenty of reasons to be excited by this new production, primarily, the cast. The show will feature a mix of Broadway talents and established actors and singers.
Country superstar and Grammy winner Carrie Underwood will take on the famous role of the von Trapp children’s governess Maria, which Julie Andrews previously played to great acclaim. We all know Underwood is a talented vocalist but the question remains as to how she will fare singing, not country music, but beloved Broadway tunes, such as the show’s standards “My Favorite Things” and Do-Re-Mi.” I have high hopes and also look forward to seeing her act, having previously only seen in her smaller roles in her film debut Soul Surfer and guest starring back in 2010 on the comedy series How I Met Your Mother. Playing opposite Underwood is True Blood’s Stephen Moyer as Captain von Trapp who I think will prove to be a great fit for the role. Moyer also recently proved himself musically capable performing as Billy Flynn in a live production of the musical Chicago at the Hollywood Bowl in July of this year (here’s a link to his performance of “Razzle Dazzle”: http://youtu.be/TnO7jL_b8rQ) alongside Ashlee Simpson and Les Miserables’s Samantha Banks.
Even more exciting though, in my opinion, are the Broadway performers who will be co-starring in “The Sound of Music Live!” Musical theatre vets Audra McDonald, Christian Borle, and Laura Benanti are all former Tony Award winners and versatile actors and actresses with incredible voices who I’m confident will use their immense talent to improve this production.
As a huge Broadway fan and someone who, like many others young and old, grew up with the original The Sound of Music movie, I’m very excited to see this beautiful family friendly story revitalized, especially by such a promising cast.
