On December 20, 2013, John R. Gambling, host of the live morning radio show “Rambling With Gambling,” had his last radio show ever. The third generation Gambling to host ended the longest-running radio show in history, as stated by “The Guinness Book of World Records,” in a nostalgic fashion.
New York Daily News discussed the sentimental moment, stating that Gambling's final guest was none other than New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who referred to the host as, “A great American and a great New Yorker.” Gambling also took calls from Rudy Giuliani, Donald Trump and Bill O’Reilly, who praised him for his excellent work and discussed how much the legendary show would be missed. Gambling's family was also in the studio to celebrate with the host in the final moments of the show.
Newsday caught up with John and talked to him about his exit. In response, Gambling simply said, “I'm old.” In addition, his three grown sons did not go into radio.
Although the moment was bittersweet, Gambling is optimistic about the future and plans to enjoy his retirement.
