Al Jazeera’s journalist writes a letter about the experience behind bars in Egypt

Al Jazeera’s employees, who were covering Egypt’s current political events, had been walking on thin ice against the Egyptian government. This is simply because they spoke to the opposing side about news.

Journalism’s main focus is to spread news in an unbiased fashion. A desired way to reach this objective would include communication with all sides involved in a given topic.

Peter Greste, Mohamed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed were all accused by the Egyptian government of mingling with the outlawed group, the Muslim Brotherhood, according to CNN.

Al Jazeera writes, they are being accused of broadcasting untruths and affiliation with a terrorist group. Also, that these allegations are not supported.

This incident has sparked a lot of involvement about press rights from activists and journalist alike, reports CNN.

In his letter, Greste illustrates what his job, as a journalist, entails and the importance of a society where differing ideas are allowed to exist.

“As a journalist I am committed to defending a fundamental freedom of the press that no one in my profession can credibly work without,” said Greste in the letter according to Al Jazeera.
