'Gravity,' '12 Years A Slave' and 'American Hustle' lead 2014 BAFTA nominations

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts announced its nominations for the 2014 film awards, with Gravity earning the most nominations with 11. 12 Years A Slave and American Hustle came in a close second with 10 nominations each.

The BAFTAs are seen as a warm-up to the Oscars. This year’s ceremony is scheduled for Feb. 16, though, which is weeks before the Oscars on March 2. Still, many of the same films are competing for similar awards, although Behind The Candelabra gets special attention at the BAFTAs since it was released theatrically in the U.K. Since Steven Soderbergh's Liberace movie only aired on HBO in the U.S., it’s not eligible at the Oscars.

On Tuesday, the BAFTAs announced the contenders for the EE Rising Star Award - Lupita Nyong’o, Dane DeHaan, Lea Seydoux, George McKay and Will Poulter. Nyong’o has also been nominated for her supporting role in 12 Years A Slave.

And the nominees in the major categories are:

Original Screenplay: American Hustle, Inside Llewyn Davis, Gravity, Blue Jasmine, Nebraska
