Dean holds a hunter’s funeral for Kevin and then goes back in the bunker and looks through Kevin’s stuff. His grief overwhelms him and throws everything around.
Cas returns to the bunker while Dean is packing up. Cas notices something is wrong and Dean tells him everything from the moment Gadreel entered into Sam. Dean tells Cas he is going to kill Gadreel which would also kill Sam. Cas says if Sam knows he can cast him out but Sam doesn’t know about the angel. They then discover they might be able to hack into the angel’s brain, much like they did to Samandriel in season 8 but they need help from Crowley.
They ask Crowley for his help in exchange for a taste of some human blood. Crowley counters saying he can’t teach them how to hack an angel’s brain but he could do it for them. Cas has his reservations about the deal but Dean agrees and they all head to Cas’ car to go find Sam. Unfortunately they are spotted by a demon that passes on to Abaddon that Crowley is on the move.
Metatron is at a bar, where Gadreel’s former vessel is a bartender. Gadreel comes to meet Metatron with the angel and demon tablets in tow and Metatron asks how the task went with killing Kevin. He then gives him his next target. “How many more lives do I have to take?” Gadreel asks him. Is Gadreel having second thoughts about teaming up with Metatron?
Dean, Cas and Crowley go see a woman named Cecily who works at a building for the NSA. She catches him up on what’s going on with hell and then looks up the location of the Impala for him.
Gadreel finds out his target is an angel named Abner who happens to be Gadreel’s best friend. Abner is using the fall of the angels as a second chance and thinks Gadreel should as well telling him the key to happiness is getting the one thing you love most and never letting it go but it always comes with a price.
Dean and Cas arrive at the Impala and then enter the house to find Abner dead. They hear the sink running and enter the kitchen where Gadreel is washing the blood off his hands. He throws Dean into a bookcase and then Cas comes behind Gadreel and punches him in the face.
Cecily tells Abaddon that Crowey went to Somerset, PA with Dean and Cas to track the Impala. When asked how she knows that Cecily tells her she’s been playing both sides. Abaddon is not impressed and kills her with an angel sword.
Gadreel is tied up in a basement and Cas tells Dean that once Gadreel leaves Sam’s body, Sam will be able to heal on his own. Since Gadreel refuses to leave Sam, Crowley begins shoving needles into Gadreel’s head which causes him to scream out. Dean can’t continue watching so he walks away and him and Cas have a heart to heart about Dean kicking Cas out of the bunker and lying to him. Crowley breaks up the moment by calling them both back into the room where Gadreel is just saying his name repeatedly. Cas is furious because Gadreel let Lucifer into the Garden of Eden which led to everything that has taken place on Earth.
Dean decides it’s time for a Plan B, which was to have Cas posess Sam. Unfortunately Cas can’t possess a vessel without permission from the vessel. Crowley comes up with a Plan C which is for Crowley himself to possess Sam and warn him of the angel inside of him. There’s only one problem to this plan though, Sam’s pesky anti-possession tattoo on his chest. Cas takes care of it with no problem in what is the best way to get rid of a tattoo. A little bit on angel healing power makes his chest tattoo free.
While Dean is unchaining Crowley he gives him a code word (Poughkeepsie) so Sam knows it’s time to run. With that Crowley enters Sam’s dream and gives him the code word. He quickly gives him a recap of what’s going but Sam is still wary. So Crowley picks up a nearby gun and shoots Sam but he miraculously lives and remembers everything he’s seen while Gadreel has been inside him. Crowley tells Sam to cast the angel out and Gadreel is standing right behind Crowley. The two get into an altercation with Gadreel seeming to come out on top. Sam jumps in on it and gets the upper hand and tells him to get out of his head.
Having nowhere else to go Gadreel reenters his old vessel at the bar and Metatron asks “Winchester trouble?”
Crowley also leaves Sam but before they can do anything else Abaddon arrives. The boys and Cas leave Crowley to handle Abaddon on his own. She tells her demons to kill Crowley but they refuse. Crowley tells Abaddon it isn’t a fight, it’s more of a political campaign and with that he vanishes leaving her alone in the basement.
Cas heals Sam but says it will take a while for Sam to fully recover. Sam is angry at Dean for taking away his choice to die and angry about what happened while the angel possessed him. Dean takes full responsibility for Kevin’s death and he plans to find Gadreel and kill him alone because he doesn’t want anyone else dying or getting hurt because of him.
Sam agrees he should leave but he’s missing the real problem. When Dean asks what he means, Sam just tells him to leave. Dean drives away leaving Sam and Cas behind.
