Two college freshmen were on the hunt for a roommate and instead found family in the most unexpected of places.
Mikayla Stern-Ellis and Emily Nappi initially met online while looking for roommates at Tulane University in New Orleans. While they did not move in together, they had a bond and became quick friends. After meeting, the two discovered that they were both conceived by an anonymous sperm donor. Ironically, the donor for both of them was Colombian.
It started off as a friendly joke they had, according to Yahoo News, the duo would joke that they had a 25 percent chance of being related.
According to NY Daily News, when Stern-Ellis went home for break, she told her family about her new friend Nappi and the similarities they shared. Her mother thought that it was more than a coincidence, and asked about Nappi’s donor number.
Curious, the women exchanged donor numbers and found out that it was no laughing matter. They were related by blood.
Stern-Ellis spoke to the Tulane Hullabaloo, their school’s newspaper, saying that finding her half-sister was proof to her that she had chosen the right school.
