Charter school teacher suspended for distributing Lil Wayne lyrics to students

A South Florida teacher has been suspended for handing out uncensored lyrics of Lil Wayne's song, “Six Foot Seven Foot” to her eigth grade students for an assignment.

WPTV reported that the teacher, who was employed at The Charter Schools of Boyton Beach in south Florida, handed out the lyrics to her students and instructed them to highlight examples of figurative language in the lyrics. When her students took the assignments home, their parents were shocked and enraged.

"They shouldn't be teaching this stuff in school for language arts. I mean, who in their right mind would give kids something like this?" a concerned parent was quoted as saying.

Urban Belle Magazine also reported that the teacher has been suspended for three days as a result of the incident.

When approached by press, headmaster Wayne Owens released his statement: "The lesson was for students to learn to identify literary devices. The teacher had already introduced Edgar Allen Poe and Shakespeare. Students were having difficulty grasping the concepts of literary devices such as: pun, simile, metaphor, so the teacher used colloquial material. This material did not meet the school's standards and was not approved.. The teacher recognizes that it was totally inappropriate for a school assignment."

WPTV also reported that school policy states that all material used in the classroom must be G-Rated and requires approval from officials. Although the teacher was known to have an “unblemished record,” it is not known whether or not the material was ever submitted for approval or if pressure from the public caused the board to penalize the teacher.
