The guitar duo have released the opening track from their upcoming album 9 Dead Alive.
The duo's website says that each song on the album is a tribute to those who have died "but through their deeds and words still resonate in the 21st century". "The Soundmaker", which can be heard at Rolling Stone, is dedicated to luthier Antonio de Torres Jurado, who is credited with designing the modern classical guitar. Rodrigo told Rolling Stone that the album would not exist without the guitarmaker.
Other inspirations for the album include animals and nature, as well as historic figures varying from Harriet Tubman to Eleanor of Aquitaine.
9 Dead Alive is due out April 29th. It was self produced by Rodrigo and Gabriela with mixing by Andrew Scheps, who has worked with Metallica, Adele, and Lana Del Rey.
In a promotional video for the album Gabriela said the intent for 9 Dead Alive was to imitate a live performance "as if me and Rod were in your living room".
A documentary by Alejandro Franco about Rodrigo y Gabriela will premiere this March at SXSW.
