attacks in 2013.
According to the Shark Attack File, Florida had six times more shark attacks than California last year. The sunshine state held 24 attacks on its coastline compared to the low number of four attacks on the west coast.
Number two, which included 16 attacks and the only two fatalities the U.S. experienced, was in Hawaii.
Some other interesting states that made the list with one attack each were North Carolina, Oregon, Texas, New Jersey and Alabama. South Carolina surprisingly had four attacks, the same as California.
Robert Collier, Founder and President of the Shark Research Committee, told The Inertia that “The more people that are in the water, the more shark encounters there are going to be. Sharks are not sedentary.”
“They move to different areas to hunt and sometimes those areas are hot spots for surfers or beachgoers,” he added.
The increase is high compared to 2011 with only 29 reported shark attacks in the U.S., The Huffington Post reports.
