Jimmy Graham to receive franchise tag from Saints

The New Orleans Saints will use the franchise on tight end Jimmy Graham, who is the team's leading receiver.

Graham caught 16 touchdown passes, according to ESPN. This marks an NFL record for tight ends. He caught 86 passes for 1,215 yards in 2013.

Since being drafted in the third round of the 2010 NFL draft, Graham emerged as one of the top pass catchers in the NFL in his 2011 breakout season, which included 99 catches for 1,310 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Graham has not looked back since emerging as one of the top tight ends in the NFL. This has led him and his camp to argue that he should be paid like a wide receiver. The Saints see him as a tight end though, so they tagged him with the $6.709 million tag.

According to NBC Sports, both sides are far apart in long-term contract talks.

This puts the Saints in danger of losing Graham since his camp has a firm goal for him to become the highest-paid tight end in NFL history. This would demand $10 million a year since New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski makes $9 million a year.
