Kerry Kennedy found not guilty of driving while impaired

Kerry Kennedy was found not guilty of driving while impaired on Friday.

According to The New York Times, jurors took one hour to find Sen. Robert F. Kennedy’s daughter not guilty of driving under the influence of a drug.

The 54-year-old maintained that she took a sleeping pill thinking it was her prescribed medication and then headed to the gym.

USA Today noted that after the four-man and two-woman jury acquitted Kennedy of the single charge, she stood outside the courthouse and thanked them.

"I want to say thank you to the jury for returning this verdict and for all their work over the last few days," she said.

She also thanked her lawyers and her family.

The charge brought against the human rights activist stemmed from a July 13, 2012, incident in which she drove down the highway for miles and sideswiped a truck.

Kennedy said she did not remember the accident. She was under the influence of the Ambien pill she said she accidentally took at the time.
