O’Donnell revealed her secret at the annual Go Red For Women luncheon, sponsored by the American Heart Association, in Detroit.
"I did what many woman do, and I did not take care of myself," O’Donnell said. "And that's why I'm here, to try to get women to know you're worth it, take care of yourself and know the symptoms."
The keynote speaker went on to describe her experience of the heart attack she had in August 2012. After the scare, the comedian changed her lifestyle, according to People. O’Donnell reduced her intake of red meat, carbohydrates and sugar and began exercising with wife Michelle Rounds.
