'12 Years a Slave' cleans up at Spirit Awards

12 Years a Slave took home five awards from the Spirit Awards.

The Wrap reports that Steve McQueen's 12 Years a Slave took home the most awards from Saturday's Independent Spirit Awards.

The film was awarded with Best Feature, Best Screenplay for John Ridley, Best Cinematography for Sean Bobbitt, as well as Best Director for Steve McQueen, and Best Supporting Female for Lupita Nyong'o.

McQueen praised both Michael Fassbender and Chiwetel Ejiofor for their roles, though they did not win.

Dallas Buyers Club was the only other film to win more than one award. Matthew McConaughey won for lead actor, and supporting actor went to Jared Leto.

The Los Angeles Times reports that the race for the Best Picture award is really close, but it is a three way battle between 12 Years, Gravity, and American Hustle.

These three films have all won special honors at different award ceremonies, making the race even closer.

Hustle won Best Film from the New York Film Critics Circle. Gravity won Best Film at the Los Angeles Film Critics Association. 12 Years and Hustle both won best picture awards at the Golden Globes.

Hustle won the Screen Actors Guild for Outstanding Cast, and Gravity and 12 Years tied for Best Theatrical Motion Picture at the Producers Guild of America Awards.

The winner for best picture will be announced Sunday at the Academy Awards on ABC.
