2014 NFL salary cap is $133 million

The player’s association announced Friday that the salary cap for the upcoming NFL season is $133 million. That is a jump up from last year’s cap of $123 million.

Before the new cap the highest previous cap was $127.997 million in 2009. According to usatoday the union said that most teams carried over unused cap space from 2013, with an average carryover of $6.1 million for those teams. That means teams will be able to afford player salaries of more than $4.4 billion 2014.

The 2014 season and free agency begin March 11. With a new salary cap teams can afford to offer free agents better deals than they were seeing. The money is also expected to be spent on large upcoming deals for the young quarterback stars that are still on their rookie contracts.

The salary increase is expected to keep rising. According to espn the cap will likely increase to over $140 million in 2015 and will surpass $150 million in 2016.
