Pixar will be going back to sequels with The Incredibles 2 and Cars 3. While it has always been intriguing to see the further adventures of Mr. and Mrs. Incredible, the announcement of a third Cars movie really makes it sound as if Pixar’s not really rushing to develop original ideas.
The news that Disney and Pixar are working on the sequels came yesterday, during Disney CEO Bob Iger’s meeting with shareholders. It was later confirmed with a tweet from Pixar. “It’s official: we’re currently working on new films featuring your favorite characters from The Incredibles and Cars,” the tweet reads.
Even if you don’t like sequels, the idea of Brad Bird returning to his most famous creations over a decade after the first film is exciting. After all, if sequels are now so important to the superhero genre, The Incredibles should get one too. Bird is also deeply involved with Disney, as he’s developing Tomorrowland with George Clooney.
It really is disappointing though that Pixar’s first bad movie is still getting all this love from the studio. Yes, it’s John Lasseter’s baby, but Cars was a stinker. It has provided Disney with a cash cow, though, as the toys are still selling. Cars 2 didn’t do anything to lift the franchise, but it still made money, as did Disney Toon’s Planes. Even Planes is getting a sequel!
Sequels are a part of Pixar’s DNA - after all, their third movie was Toy Story 2. But the Toy Story trilogy was a creative tour-de-force. The Cars sequel just felt unnecessary, as did the Monsters Inc prequel Monsters University. (It may have been unnecessary, but it was easily the best Pixar movie since Toy Story 3.) So, a Cars 3 can’t help but feel like a cash grab.
Thankfully, Pixar does have some original material on the way. The troubled Good Dinosaur is due out in November 2015 and Inside Out in June 2015. Once Finding Nemo’s followup, Finding Dory, hits cinemas in July 2016 though, it looks like we’re stuck with Pixar sequels for awhile.
The future may be bright for Pixar, but it’s starting to look like it’s Golden Age of original features is behind it.
