Ireland gang boss John Gilligan was shot Saturday during an ambush in Dublin.
The only reason Gilligan may have survived the ambush was due to the fact that he was wearing body armor. It is believed at this time that he will survive his injuries.
The 61-year-old Dublin criminal is currently being hospitalized and is considered to be in critical condition after being shot at close range three times, Independent reports. He has been considered as someone who was going to be targeted after getting out of prison in October of last year. He had spent 17 years in prison for drug trafficking.
Gilligan is widely speculated as the culprit behind the murder of investigative journalist Veronica Guerin, despite his acquittal, according to the Associated Press. Guerin was killed back in 1996 by members of Gilligan’s gang after writing several stories about the convicted drug dealer. One member of the gang, Brian Meehan, was sentenced to life in prison for the murder in 1999.
