MGM announced on Monday that the movie studio is moving forward on a live-action/CG hybrid of The Pink Panther and a director has already been selected.
The film will place focus on the animated character of the pink panther who only ever appeared in the animated opening credits, more than on inspector Jacques Clouseau, who the films primarily followed due to Peter Sellers' iconic performance, according to < href= http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/mgm-new-pink-panther-movie-simpsons-691821>The Hollywood Reporter, who was the first to report the news. The character spawned its own cartoon.
The Simpsons Movie director David Silverman has been tapped to help the new film. A fellow Simpsons colleague Michael Price is currently in negotiations to pen the script, while Walter Mirisch and Julie Andrews are on board to produce the film.
Mirisch executive produced the original films and Andrews was married to the original director Blake Edwards, who has since passed away.
MGM motion picture group president Jonathan Glickman said, "We are incredibly proud to re-introduce the Pink Panther to a brand new generation in such a fresh way. Even more exciting is the chance to work again with Walter Mirisch and Julia Andrews, as well as the talented David Silverman, whose enthusiasm convinced us to 'Think Pink!,'" reports Deadline.
The pink panther cartoon was created by Edwards, Hawley Pratt and Friz Preleng, with the latter two directing the short The Pink Phink, which won an Academy Award for Best Animated Short in 1964.
