Michigan Rep. Dave Camp announced on Monday that he would not be seeking reelection after spending 24 years in Congress.
The House Ways and Means Committee chairman said in a statement, "Serving in Congress is the great honor of my professional life." The 60-year-old Republican added, reports The Associated Press, "I am deeply grateful to the people of the 4th Congressional District for placing their trust in me."
Camp, who has lobbied for changes to the federal tax code, was expected to retire because as chairman of Ways and Means, he is term-limited. He also beat non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2012 after going through chemotherapy.
According to The Washington Post, Camp had been working on a plan to overhaul tax code, though he struggled to find supporters on either side of the aisle.
Camp also lost his ally in Max Baucus (D-Mont.), Senate Finance Committee chairman, who later decided he would retire and will become the U.S. Ambassador to China.
The Michigan representative was "a role model to us all," Rep. Greg Walden (R-Ore.) said. "It simply won't be the same around here without Dave's leadership."
