Sony working on releasing a few animated films, including a reboot of the Smurfs franchise.
The Wrap reports that Sony Pictures Animation is working on a reboot of the Smurfs franchise, which will be completely animated.
Raja Gosnel, director of the first two films, will not be returning. Istead, Sony called on Kelly Asbury who has worked on Shrek 2 and Gnomeo & Juliet. The Smurfs reboot is scheduled to release Aug. 2015.
Genndy Tartakovsky has also been called on to oversee a computer animated Popeye. He is also working on an original animated film entitled Genndy Tartakovsky's Can You Imagine?. No plot details or release dates have been released.
Tartakovsky is also set to return as director for Transylvania 2. Adam Sandler will return as Dracula, as well as co-writer alongside Robert Smigel (Saturday Night Live). It is scheduled for a Sept. 2015 release.
Variety reports that Sony Pictures has also been working on a few other films in order to catch up with its competitors.
They are getting ready for The Amazing Spider-man 2, set to release May 2, and is getting ready to launch a Spider-man franchise with films like Venom, and The Sinister Six.
Sony is also working on a film adaptation of the R. L. Stine novels, Goosebumps, and is also co-financing the next James Bond film.
