A Virginia Beach middle-schooler was suspended and recommended for expulsion last week after confiscating a razor from a student trying to harm himself, and reported the incident to a teacher.
The Washington Times reports that Bayside Middle School sixth-grader Adrionna Harris was suspended for 10 days after taking the razor from another boy who was using it to mutilate his arm. She threw it away and attempted to explain what he was doing to himself wasn't right.
“I took the razor blade, and then I threw it away immediately … I didn’t carry it around the school … I didn’t use it against anyone … I threw it away,” Harris said.
Apparently her word alone led to her suspension, as if the administration would rather she didn't tell the truth of the incident or report her fellow students' problematic behavior.
“I was shocked and surprised. I was very shocked that a student would get suspended for saving another child,” said Adrionna’s mother Rachel Harris, according to Wavy.com. “The school system over-reached absolutely."
Adrionna said she would do the same thing again, even knowing the consequences, as she's confident she did the right thing.
The school ignored the calls and complaints from the Harris family, but the media attention has forced them into a bargaining position. They are now re-evaluating the punishment.
Her suspension hearing was moved up to Thursday, and she hopes that her punishment will be curtailed so she can return to class on Friday.
