Two gunmen shot Swedish reporter Nils Horner on a crowded street in Kabul, Afghanistan on Tuesday. The journalist was carrying out interviews when he was reportedly shot in the back of the head.
As the New York Times notes, this is a rare instance of an assassinationstyle killing of a foreigner in a capital city full of them.
This attack marks the first time in years a Westerner was specifically targeted in Afghanistan's bustling capital, sending a wave of concern through the community of diplomats, journalists, and others living in the city.
The men, dressed in "traditional clothing" approached Horner as he interviewed security guards. At least one drew a gun and fired a shot before they both fled.
The 51-year-old Horner was a long-time correspondent for the Swedish Sveriges Radio and had both British and Swedish nationalities.
"Nils was one of our absolute best and most experienced correspondents and what has happened to him today is horrible. We're doing our best to gather all the details," SR's CEO Cilla Benko told The Local.
Conditions in the city have deteriorated in recent years, as has most of Afghanistan including rural areas, and the civil unrest and violence has forced the sizable expatriate community to live under tighter security restrictions.
