Teens hit by train on their way to dance

A California girl is fighting for her life after boyfriend pushed her out of the way of an oncoming train.

Mickayla Friend, 16, was on her way to the Sadie Hawkins Dance with her boyfriend, Mateus Moore, 16, when the two decided to stop at a store beforehand. According to The Mirror, Friend and Moore took a shortcut to reach the store and were walking along train tracks when a freight train came down the tracks behind them.

The conductor reportedly blew the horn and put on the emergency brakes, but it was too late.

Mateus Moore used his final moments to push his girlfriend out of the way and took the brunt of the hit. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to The New York Daily News, Friend was taken to the hospital and is listed in critical condition. Her family is confident she will pull through.

"It's her first boyfriend, and her first love and she just got it taken away from her in an instant,” Alithya Friend, Mickayla Friend’s, sister said.

The accident occurred near a park where a children’s baseball game was in progress, leaving children and adults to witness the horror.

"They would have both been underneath that train if he didn't push her out of the way at the last second," Sean Stark, a witness, told KCRA.

"I heard the train it was honking a lot. Right when they turned around it was too late. The guy pushed the girl out the way, but she still got hit by the train and it sucked him in and run him over,” Erik Stark, 11, said.
