A concert will close out the season finale of Parks and Recreation with indie-rock bands and fun musical appearances. Yo La Tengo will be in attendance on the hit comedy show starring Amy Poehler, as a Night Ranger cover band titled Bobby Knight Ranger—the eighties power ballad “Sister Christian” will most definitely be played.
"It's a Night Ranger cover band that wears red sweaters," Michael Shur, the executive producer told The A.V. Club. “There was a total throwaway joke where Andy discovers Duke Silver and tells Ron, ‘You’re going to play the Unity Concert, I have you on right after Bobby Knight Ranger. . . One of our writers, Donick Carey, is very good friends with the band Yo La Tengo, who are one of my favorite bands, and he emailed them and said, ‘Hey, do you guys want to play Bobby Knight Ranger?’ And they were, like, ‘Sure!’"
Yo La Tengo couldn’t have been more enthused to act as the cover band—they came ready in kahkis, red sweaters and white wigs to play music for 1,000 fake Bobby Knight Ranger fans, as reported by Rolling Stone
"It was just really cool. They were so game and so happy to be there, and it was so cool of them, because. . . I mean, they’re basically in disguise. Yo La Tengo fans will recognize them, definitely, but most people won’t. They just did it because they like comedy and wanted to be a part of the show. It was super cool. I’m forever in their debt,” said Schur.
The April 24 season finale concert line-up will also consist of The Decemberists, Ginuwine and Letters to Cleo and Jeff Tweedy, frontman of Wilco.
Interestingly enough, Mark Rivers, who is the brain behind all of the songs written for ‘Parks and Rec’ doubles as a drummer in real life band, Letters to Cleo, and Andy Dwyer’s fictional band, Mouse Rat. Sunglasses and a hat just might to do trick to disguise him from those who could possibly get confused by the drummer, according to The A.V. Club.
What better way to unify Eagleton and Pawnee than with an entertaining show filled with music?—alright maybe a stack of waffles would work, but maybe they’ll be there too!
