The nominations for the 2014 Tony Awards were announced in New York on Tuesday morning, with the musical A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder and the play Act One leading their respective fields.
James Lapine’s Act One, based on Moss Hart’s memoir, was the most-nominated new play of the season with five nominations. Tony Shalhoub was nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Lead Role and Beowulf Boritt was nominated for Best Scenic Design of a play. Jane Greenwood was nominated for her costume design and Dan Moses Schreier was nominated for Best Sound Design.
The other nominees for Best Play are Robert Schenkkan’s All The Way with Bryan Cranston, who was nominated for Actor in a Lead Role; Harvey Fierstein’s casa Valentina; Mothers and Sons by Terrence McNally; and John Patrick Shanley’s Outside Mullingar.
The nominees for Best Musical are Disney’s Aladdin; After Midnight; Beautiful - The Carole King Musical; and A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder. After Midnight was the only one of these to fail to score a Best Book nomination. Instead, Woody Allen’s Bullets Over Broadway was nominated.
There are four nominees for Best Revival of a Play: The Cripple of Inishmaan, which featured nominee Daniel Racliffe; The Glass Menagerie; A Raisin in the Sun with Denzel Washington; and Twelfth Night.
The Neil Patrick Harris-lead Hedwig and the Angry Inch is one of three musical revivals up for that award. The two others are Les Miserables and Violet. Harris was also nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Lead Role in a Musical.
Actresses up for Lead in a play include A Raisin in the Sun’s LaTanya Richardson Jackson and Mothers and Sons’ Tyne Daly. Idina Menzel scored a nomination for Best Lead Actress in a Musical for If/Then and her competition includes Beautiful’s Jessie Mueller.
The new revival of Cabaret, which opened just in time to qualify, only scored two nominations. Linda Emond and Danny Burstein were nominated for their featured performances.
The Tonys air on Sunday, June 8 on CBS.
