CBS' 'Bad Teacher' series with Ari Graynor starts Thursday

CBS still has one new show left to premiere at the tail end of the 2013-2014 TV season. The eye network’s television adaptation of the 2011 Cameron Diaz hit Bad Teacher premieres tonight.

Sony Pictures TV began developing the project back in October 2012 with Hilary Winston (Community, Happy Endings) writing the pilot. Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg, the writers of the film, are producing.

The series find Ari Graynor as the titular bad teacher, who is trying to find a rich husband to replace her old one. It airs in the Thursday, 9:30 p.m. slot vacated by The Crazy Ones.

Like The Crazy Ones, Bad Teacher doesn’t feature a laugh track and is in the single camera format. That’s a rarity for CBS, which is home to multi-cam shows like The Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men.

So far, reviews have been mixed. Entertainment Weekly suggests that Graynor and the rest of the cast deserve better material. The Los Angeles Times noted that the characters are all extremes and the differences between Graynor’s bad teacher and Diaz’s.

Bad Teacher co-stars David Alan Grier, Ryan Hansen and Sara Gilbert.
